Rich Froning Jr. and 22-year-old Annie Thorisdottir have earned the 2012 titles of Fittest Man and Woman on Earth™ for the second consecutive year at the sixth annual CrossFit Games. The 24 year old from Tennessee and the 22 year old from Iceland, respectively, beat out some of the world’s top athletes at the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games, a 4 day gruelling sports and fitness challenge, which took place at Camp Pendleton and the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, USA.
The CrossFit Games featured 15 workouts designed to test the overall physical fitness of a contestant based on: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Among the challenge was a triathlon which involved a 700-meter ocean swim, an 8-kilometer single-speed mountain bike ride over mixed terrain, and an 11.3-kilometer trail run over the infamous Microwave Mountain. Not only that, but they also had to tackle Camp Pendleton’s Marines obstacle course in an elimination-style bracketed tournament.
The participants in the games included 46 men and 45 women. In second place in the men's challenge was 34 year old Matt Chan from Colorado, and in third place was 30 year old Kyle Kasperbauer from Nebraska. In the women's challenge, second place went to 23 year old Julie Foucher from Michigan, and third place went to 31-year-old Talayna Fortunato from Florida.
