Reem Al Kanhal's designs are unique, with bold prints and trendy cuts, it's no wonder they've been snapped up so quickly by the likes of DNA Riyadh and S*uce Boutique. Through dedication, determination, and enthusiasm, Reem, a Saudi young creative, turned fashion design from a hobby to a flourishing career. Khaleejesque got in touch with Reem Al Kanhal and discussed her fashion career, inspirations and fashion brand RK Designs.
How did you start RK Designs?
Ever since I was a little girl, I choose my own outfits and what I wore. I was very curious about designer clothes flipping my mom's YSL blazer trying to figure how it was constructed; I was only 9 years old back then. I wanted to study fashion, but since there were no fashion schools in Saudi Arabia, this curiosity and passion had to be learnt from books; and was turned into a hobby.
This hobby turned into a small business after people came up to me asking me where I got my outfits or gowns and were shocked that they were all my own design; which in turn landed me orders and a demand was created for my designs. This phenomena made me decide to go to fashion school, and in turn I launched my first RK collection in 2010.
Who do you design for?
I design for the little girl in every woman that loves to play dress up .
What inspires you?
My designs are inspired by people, books, history, art, architecture, and movies; anything and everything inspires me and can influence the entire scope of my collection.
What's in store for RK Designs?
I got so much positive support locally, and thereby in turn made me open my very own showroom in Riyadh in 2011. Regionally, I stock at S*uce Dubai, with plans to expand my showroom regionally and one day stock RK Designs internationally.
