Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), a Qatar Foundation partner university, has introduced a new merit-based scholarship for outstanding students applying for the 2027-2028 academic year.
Intended for new incoming undergraduates, the Merit Scholarship is valued at up to USD 40,000 per year, with up to five scholarships awarded each academic year. The funding covers tuition and may also support housing or essential academic and living expenses, subject to prior approval. The scholarship is renewable annually and based on continued academic performance.
“VCUarts Qatar’s current student body reflects the caliber we want to continue attracting: intellectually curious and creatively ambitious young adults who engage in their disciplines beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Caitlin Murphy, Director of Recruitment and Admissions. “Our students have the potential to drive change across diverse industries, and VCUarts Qatar equips them with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to realize that potential fully.
“This scholarship expands access to a VCUarts Qatar education, enabling talented applicants to fully benefit from academic and creative opportunities that may otherwise have been beyond their reach.”
Prospective students do not need to submit a separate scholarship application, as every applicant is automatically considered. Selection is based on academic and creative excellence, assessed through the applicant’s academic record, recommendation letters and a potential structured interview. Art History applicants are assessed through their essay and interview, while BFA applicants are also evaluated on the strength of their portfolio. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.30 or higher and demonstrate English proficiency through a TOEFL score of 90 or above, a Duolingo score of 130 or above, or an IELTS score of 7.0 or above.
Students can apply to VCUarts Qatar’s Bachelor of Arts in Art History or Bachelor of Fine Arts programs. BFA students begin with a one-year Art Foundation program before choosing a major in Graphic Design, Interior Design, Painting + Printmaking or Kinetic Imaging.
The application process, with automatic consideration for the Merit Scholarship, is now open with a priority deadline of November 15, 2026, and the final deadline on January 15, 2027.
A VCUarts Qatar education holistically combines a framework that integrates creative practice, critical thinking, experiential learning, problem-solving, and collaboration. Students, therefore, benefit from learning transferable skills that provide a competitive advantage in their future careers – whether in creative industries or others.
Throughout their learning journey, students have access to multiple specialized academic and learning resources such as the Materials Library, Digital Design + Fabrication studios, and Innovative Media Studios. Classes are also designed to maintain a low student-faculty ratio, creating a more interactive environment and one-on-one mentorship.
Students can also participate in international exhibitions alongside faculty and alumni through VCUarts Qatar and its Institute for Creative Research Labs.
Work by VCUarts Qatar students is currently being presented at أغرب إدراك | Aghrab Idrāk: Thresholds of Perception, a Collateral Event at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (June 1 – November 22). And earlier this month, in the University’s fourth consecutive participation, students and faculty presented their joint project, Alternative Frequencies, at Ars Electronica Festival, in Linz, Austria, on September 9-13, 2026 Global exposure and direct engagement in the discourse on arts, social issues, technology and other disciplines through participation in globally recognized platforms allows students to encounter new perspectives, engage with practitioners from around the world, and position their work within a wider cultural context.
Major events at VCUarts Qatar’s campus include the annual Graduation Showcase, the biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, and the Tasmeem Doha art and design conference.
VCUarts Qatar also offers students funding opportunities to pursue research and develop their creative practice. Through initiatives such as the Undergraduate Research Award, students receive funding and faculty mentorship to develop research-driven creative projects, with the completed work presented in a public exhibition.
VCUarts Qatar’s holistic student experience includes field study that emphasizes skills sharing, hands-on learning, and creative practice. In 2025, on one such excursion, students traveled on a two-week, faculty-led trip to Japan, where they participated in workshops with traditional and contemporary Japanese artisans that focused on craft materials, processes, and techniques.
Upon graduating, students will join a network of over 1300 graduates whose careers span a wide range of industries in Qatar and around the world, applying their creative education to roles in design, filmmaking, cultural institutions, technology and business.
