In the world of nail color, Chanel leads the pack, and so other beauty houses must follow. Well, that’s how the laws have been rewritten ever since the launch of Rouge Noir all those years ago. As soon as the newest shade of the season is announced, waiting lists all around the world grow ever longer and Ebay auctions see the price of the little bottle rise to over double that in the department stores.
This season’s must-have shade is no exception. Mimosa by Chanel, an exuberant canary yellow, is uber bright – but don’t let that put you off! Bright yellow nails have been seen all over the red carpet on just about any celebrity you care to mention: think Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna and even the more subdued Natalie Portman. Worn with confidence, it can suit almost any skin tone, as long the nails – and just as importantly – the cuticles, are in perfect condition. Ridge-filled nails and overhanging cuticles need not apply here!
If you’re tempted to try the bright nail but don’t want to lay down the £17.50 it costs for the Chanel varnish, there are other, cheaper brands that will allow you to dip your toe (or in this case, a well-manicured fingernail) into the trend for a lesser amount.
Lemon Sherbet by Models Own, £5, is slightly neon and contains a hint of shimmer, just like the Chanel shade, so it’s quite a good dupe for a fraction of the cost – just be sure to apply carefully, as lighter shades such as yellow are prone to streaking and be prepared for the need to apply three coats to get the desired effect.
Lemonade by Orly is another great option for the same price. More of a cream, less of a shimmer, this is a warm buttercup yellow, and applies very smoothly.
Even though Chanel polishes are always the front-runners every season, this summer, the range of worthy alternatives are of fabulous quality and will leave you spoilt for choice.
