Marwa Al-Ka’abi: Old Tales, New Folk Print

Poster Description:

“A popular lore based in Oman tells the tale of King Solomon’s travels to the abandoned castle of Salut in Oman to seek shelter on his journey to Jerusalem. Upon his arrival to Oman, he found an uninhabitable desert. As a result, he ordered his demons to build the Aflaj (water irrigation system) to make the land habitable. This poster challenges this myth, which discredits the ingenuity and hard work of rural Omani farmers who actually built the Aflaj. We overlook the contributions of rural groups because of the socio-cultural preconceptions we carry that privilege urban over rural regions. It is time we give these farmers visibility and credit them for their achievements.”
